Sept. 1, 2022 - The Comal Independent School District is launching its 6th Annual Going Gold Campaign for the month of September in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This year the district is partnering with the Seth Strong Foundation to sell its first “Go Gold” t-shirt with proceeds directly benefitting Comal ISD families who are undergoing a life-threatening illness of a child.

The ‘Go Gold’ t-shirts will be delivered before this date as long as they are ordered by Sept. 10.

Seth Strong Foundation
The Seth Strong Foundation, a local non-profit organization founded in 2018 by a Comal ISD family, the Permenters, whose son, Seth, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma at the age of 10 and a group of Comal ISD mothers from Bill Brown Elementary School who wanted to support them.
The district has been highlighting the struggles of families, such as the Permenters, and students, such as Seth, who live with a cancer diagnosis during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in September for six years. This year, however, is the first year, the district has been able to offer the sale of a Going Gold t-shirt, thanks to the Seth Strong Foundation.
Seth Permenter, now 16, is a 10th-grade student at Smithson Valley High School and continues to fight his cancer diagnosis, but he does not let it define him. Currently, he serves as a student athletic trainer and is involved in FFA and his church youth group.
“From the beginning, we said, ‘#livingtoday,’ and it’s just that reminder that during cancer and even now, that the best laid plans go out the window,” says Sarah Permenter, Seth’s mother, who works for Comal ISD. “All we are truly given is today. Make the most of it and know that our plans are not our plans, truly.”
