Canyon Lake High School Teacher Named Artist of the Year

Feb. 6, 2023 - A Canyon Lake High School teacher was named the 2022 New Braunfels Art League Artist of the Year at an awards presentation in January.

Nell Anderson, an art teacher at CLHS, was not expecting to win the title but hopes her own journey as an artist motivates her students to never stop creating and pursuing their passions.

“To win this award validates me as an artist and shows my students that they can be a successful artist even after they graduate from high school,” says Anderson, who has been teaching for 15 years and has a degree in studio art.

She was among 47 members of the New Braunfels Art League eligible for this year’s title. The league was established 58 years ago to promote art in the community. Over the decades, the league has done that and more, partnering with schools to showcase student art and providing a space for artists to display their work.

“The New Braunfels Art League has opened its doors for local artists to come and enter their art as well as offering an annual teen gallery for students to showcase their art. I love being part of an organization that does so much for the community and children,” Anderson says.

While this honor motivates her to continue to pursue her own creativity, Anderson will use it as a lesson for her students, a lesson in never giving up.

“I want them to know that it is OK to make mistakes and to keep trying new things. You may not win something with every art piece, but you should keep trying and never give up. This was my third year to compete for Artist of the Year, and if I had not competed in some of the league’s other shows, I would not have been eligible for this title. Never give up.”
