Feb. 24, 2023 - Comal ISD’s Canyon High School has hired Nate Leonard as its athletic coordinator and head football coach.
Leonard, who has been serving as the Cougars’ assistant head coach and offensive coordinator for the last two years, is excited to continue working with the students and families of Canyon High and New Braunfels.
“I am honored to continue to serve Cougar Nation in my new position of athletic coordinator and head football coach,” he said. “There is nowhere else I’d rather be, and no other community I’d rather serve. The vision of ‘doing things better than they’ve ever been done’ continues, and the train rolls full steam ahead. The Leonard family is forever RED.”
Prior to CHS, Leonard served as offensive coordinator at Clear Lake High School in Houston and assistant offensive line coach at Duke University under David Cutcliffe when the team won the 2018 Independence Bowl. He has also served a couple of high schools in San Antonio including Reagan High School and Memorial High School as well as Seguin High School.
Canyon High principal Dustin Davisson says he is impressed by Leonard’s leadership.
“The amount of energy that he brings daily to the athletic programs and the hallways of Canyon High school is contagious,” Davisson says. “We feel like his strengths align with the feedback we received from Cougar Nation parents and athletic staff.”
Leonard, who is originally from McKinney, has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) and a master’s degree in educational administration from Lamar University. Before becoming a coach, he had a successful football career as the starting center for the UTSA Roadrunners in the first four seasons of its program. He was a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, named to the Dave Rimington Trophy watchlist, the Conference USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for 2013 and made the Capital One Academic All-American Team in 2013.
