October 22, 2026 - Since welcoming its inaugural team in 1960, the Canyon High School volleyball program has built a distinguished history, securing numerous district and region championship titles.
The ‘Forever Red’ event hosted before the Canyon VS Steele game on October 20, not only celebrates Canyon’s deep rooted history in the New Braunfels community, but also everyone who has participated in the building of the volleyball program - from players to coaches and their families.
The event had special appearances from the 1960 volleyball team along with representatives of their coaches - Leroy Hardy and the wife and daughter of Tommy Dunn (1960-1970), Donna Boehle (1973-1997) with many of her former players and athletes, and former players of current Head Coach Heather Sanders (1999-Present).
The Forever Red theme is especially meaningful as Sanders prepares for retirement, making this her final season.
“I have been at Canyon for 28 years. It is my one and only head coaching job,” says Sanders. “While I’m not certain that it’s completely hit me, it is time to pass the torch.”
Sanders has led her team in back-to-back district championship titles since 2021, with the 2025 season being undefeated. During her time coaching, Sanders has been awarded the TGCA All-Star Coach in 2021, was inducted into the Austin College Athletic Hall of Honor, and celebrated her 800th career win in August of 2024.
“I’m incredibly proud of my time as a teacher and coach at Canyon and eternally grateful for those that took a chance on a young woman with no head coaching experience 28 years ago,” says Sanders. “While I am ready for the next chapter of my life, I will always be Forever Red.”
In retirement, Sanders will be supporting her daughter, CHS Senior Logan Sanders, as she plays collegiate volleyball at Rutgers University.
Coach Sanders’ impact on the CHS volleyball program, campus, and community is immeasurable, and without a doubt will be dearly missed. In her time as an educator with Comal ISD, she has become a true example of Growing Greatness, and we are proud to have grown alongside such an inspirational individual.
Thank you Heather Sanders for being Forever Red on your Path to Success!
